Donor eggs

Egg donation treatment

A patient may need treatment with donor eggs if she does not respond to ovarian stimulation. The patient becomes the egg recipient.

Known and anonymous donors

Egg Donation is performed in one of two ways. The eggs may be from a donor known to the recipient (Known Egg Donation), or may be from a donor unknown to the recipient (Anonymous Egg Donation).

How it is done

Egg donors are treated by IVF. Their eggs are collected, fertilized with the recipient’s husband/partner's sperm, and the resultant embryos placed in the recipient’s womb. In the UK, if a child is born it is the legal child of the recipient and her partner. The donor has no rights over this child.

Is it easy?

Known egg donation in the UK is easier to organise than anonymous donation. Typical known donors might be a young friend, niece, or volunteer unrelated to the man.

Anonymous egg donation in the UK has become more difficult to organize following loss of donor anonymity in April 2005. In the UK, a child born from anonymous egg donation is entitled to identify its genetic mother through the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, at the age of eighteen.

Eggs from abroad

Egg donation is anonymous in many countries. Mr Cowan frequently sends patients to clinics in these countries. It is simple to organize (though it may sound complicated), and is masterminded from his office in London.
