Gynaecology

Dick Cowan treats women at any stage of life for gynaecological conditions. He provides advice and performs check-ups, and surgery when necessary. The only exception is gynaecological cancer, for which he would refer you to a cancer specialist.

Check-ups

You may wish to have an annual check-up with Mr Cowan. Your check-up includes a cervical smear and testing for the human papilloma virus (HPV). Mr Cowan also performs ovarian screening and breast examinations and may refer you for a mammogram. He has an automatic recall system, to remind you when your next check-up is due.

HRT

Many patients come for advice about hormone replacement therapy (HRT), especially as reports about it in the media tend to be confusing. Dick Cowan is happy to discuss options and make recommendations. If you are concerned about, or at risk of developing, osteoporosis (brittle bone disease), he will refer you to the Portland Hospital for a bone mineral density (BMD) test and give you advice afterwards.

Surgery

Mr Cowan performs most of his surgery using keyhole techniques. If the keyhole approach is not appropriate, he will perform open surgery.
